As a rare cold front moved through the Southeast US on June 25 2012, temperatures dropped by from the mid 90’s to the 70’s in a matter of minutes sparking strong thunderstorms, hail and a few isolated tornado sightings. Summer storms like these can cause large amounts of differing types of damage from straightline winds well in excess of 50 mph, heavy rain, lightning, falling trees and branches and hail. It’s possible for one storm to cause one type of damage in one town and a completely different type of damage in the next town over, potentially causing confusion over when and how property damage occurred.
Raleigh NC and Richmond VA both had category 1 hail events with small hail coming during the night in both cities. Even hail this size, when combined with strong winds, can cause damage to roofs more than 10 years old.
